Eligibility in Hugos and Campbells
It’s awards season- if you were wondering what I’m eligible for (cause I know that’s what you think about during the dark of night when your smartphone is charging), here’s the list:
John W. Campbell Award (not a Hugo) – This is my first year of eligibility because of the pro sale of “1963: The Argument Against Louis Pasteur” in The Thackery T. Lambshead Cabinet of Curiosities. The link above is to my eligibility page. The John W. Campbell Award is given to the best new science fiction or fantasy writer whose first work of science fiction or fantasy was published in a professional publication in the previous two years.
[Note- when I mentioned this on Facebook and Twitter yesterday, some people thought I had been nominated. That is not the case- because I have a pro sale, I am now eligible for nomination. Not nominated yet.]
Escape Pod – Best Semipro Zine
Any generally available non-professional publication devoted to science fiction or fantasy which by the close of 2011 has published four (4) or more issues (or the equivalent in other media), at least one (1) of which appeared in 2011, and which in 2011 met at least two (2) of the following criteria:
1. Had an average press run of at least 1,000 copies per issue (~28,000 listeners)
2. Paid its contributors and/or staff in other than copies of the publication ($.03/word reprints, $.05/word new stories)
3. Provided at least half the income of any one person,
4. Had at least 15% of its total space occupied by advertising,
5. Announced itself to be a semiprozine. (There. We’re a semiprozine.)
Best Editor (Short Form)
The editor of at least four (4) anthologies, collections, or magazine issues (or their equivalent in other media) primarily devoted to science fiction and/or fantasy, at least one of which was published in 2011. (Escape Pod, weekly)
I Should Be Writing – Best Related Work
Any work related to the field of science fiction, fantasy, or fandom appearing for the first time during 2011 or which has been substantially modified during 2011, and which is either non-fiction or, if fictional, is noteworthy primarily for aspects other than the fictional text, and which is not eligible in any other category.Oh wait. That’s right. Podcasts are shoehorned into “best fancast” category. Hell.
Best Fancast
Any non-professional audio- or video-casting with at least four (4) episodes that had at least one (1) episode released in 2011.
Chicon 7 has exercised its right under section 3.3.15 of the WSFS Constitution to create a single, extra, one-time, Hugo category.
If you have a WorldCon membership – either from last year or this year – then you can nominate here. And if you’re annoyed at me listing this, sorry, but I am following the Paul Cornell way of thinking, “A book will only be judged on its own merits if readers have heard of it.”
