My kids both have really high reading skills too, and I also struggled with them reading books that are ‘beneath their level’ and abandoning more advanced books partway through.
But a few weeks ago I mentioned it to one of their teachers, and she said that it’s very, very normal. Just because they are *capable* of reading more advanced books doesn’t mean they’re emotionally *ready* for them.
According to this teacher, sometimes dropping a book might just be laziness – it’s harder to read and they don’t want to struggle. In those cases, we probably want to encourage them to try again. But more often, it’s a sign that they’re just not ready for that book, they’d rather be reading something they can relate to. It also doesn’t hurt if they’re reading some of the same books their (possibly less advanced) friends are reading and can discuss them together.
Just came to mind when you talked about PT’s reading in this episode and thought I’d mention. Enjoy…
