Clarion UCSD Write-A-Thon
Well, I said I had a huge goal this summer (113,000 words — which I just realized was wrong, I needed 125000 — from mid may to late August – I’m at 14454 right now) and then I heard that there’s a write-a-thon going on to support Clarion, the SF workshop happening right now.
From the site-
What is a write-a-thon, anyway? Think charity walk-a-thon. In a walk-a-thon, volunteers agree to walk as far as they can in return for pledges from sponsors who agree to donate to a charity, usually based on the number of miles the volunteer walks. Our Write-a-Thon works the same way, except instead of walking or running, our volunteers write with a goal in mind. In return, sponsors make donations to Clarion, sometimes based on number of words written, sometimes based on other goals, sometimes just to show support for the writer and Clarion.
Clarion is 6 weeks long. That’s an expensive trip to take, not to mention likely lost wages from taking 6 weeks off work. Donations go toward “making the Clarion Workshop financially self-supporting and will ensure through scholarships that every Clarion student who is accepted can attend.”
My 6 week goal: 84000 words.
Yeah. I know. But 6 weeks x 7 days x 2k a day = 84k — not to mention putting me in excellent shape to hit my goal before Aug 31. Heck, that would have me hitting my goal before WorldCon, which would make for a fine drunken Reno-hosted party indeed. So where are all these words going?
Scott Sigler’s GFL project – 12386 of 40000
ISBW nonfic book project – 7222 of 25000
Playing For Keeps 2 – 30304 of 90000
Fingertips flash project – 13700 of 20000
**Note, three of these projects had words down before I started. They’re not all going from word 1.
So I’ve written 14,454 of 125000. Clarion write-a-thon will help me with that. Also, Sigler will have my skull if I’m late.
So how well do you think I can do? You willing to sponsor me to put your money where my fingers are? My most impressive stat is writing Nanovor: Hacked! – my mid-grade novel at 20,000 words – in four days. Course, I did nothing else, and my family wondered where I was and why I complained about painful wrists, but I did it, dammit. Anyway, if you want to sponsor me, here is how.

Hey Mur! You should post your word counts for us weekly/daily/bi-daily. I’d love to hear about your progress.
I’m trying to get into the write everyday habit, (getting ready for Camp Nanowrimo) and viewing your blog always reminds me that I should in fact be writing, not reading! Thanks for being an awesome podcaster.
Wordcount is now posted in the sidebar. Watch it grow!
Go Mur! Go!
My wife just prodded me into joining Camp NaNoWriMo July 1st and since I’ve got a good feeling on what I’m planning to work on, I’m doing her one better and doing 2 months in a row.
100K, I doubt I’ve ever written that much in a shot.
I’ll be checking your sidebars for inspiration
