Just wanted to respond to your question you had about what to charge for the ‘freelance assignment.’ Being a freelancer for the past 20+ years (along with other things) you really needed more info to be able to answer the question, which is probably why you were stumbling. For example, if the assignment was for a nonfiction magazine assignment, rates could be from a just a few extra copies of the magazine on up to 1-2 dollars per word.

And you’re right, those making such assignments already know what they’re willing to pay. Other assignments could be based on either an hourly rate with again the range being broad — $15 – $150 per hour, or on a project basis.

I’d suggest in the future to table such a question by asking the person to give you more details so you can respond more accurately.

One last note, I just found and started to listen to your podcast and it was just my luck to listen to the Good Cop Bad Cop 001. After about 15 minutes I stopped listening, having drawn the conclusion that you must be one of the rudest writers I’ve ever heard. Not sure what prompted me to listen to another podcast after that but glad I did. I then learned it was an April Fools joke, but the joke almost was on both of us.

I’ll give your other podcasts a try.
