When I was a kid (third grade, maybe? Fourth? Doesn’t matter) our school would have a field day of sports and events at the last day of school. It was great fun. There were four teams, and my team (randomly picked) won one year. Personally, I hadn’t done much to contribute; I was never terribly good at sports, even with the tomboy sensibilities. But hey, blue ribbon!

Thus, I was excited my team won the blue ribbon at the end of the day, but then a particularly mean boy said, “Why are you so happy? Did YOU do anything to help the team win?” Well, no. I hadn’t won any of the races I was in. But… but… my team won. I have this blue ribbon! Doesn’t that mean anything?

This is one of those little things that for some reason stays with you your whole life. I remember that boy, and I wonder if second/third string athletes get comments like that when their team wins the championship and they never play.

So the Locus Award nominations just came out. And while I’m utterly thrilled to see several ISBW guests on the list, I was shocked to see one thing: Tor.com got a nomination for best magazine. If you didn’t know, I write and podcast for Tor.com. I don’t review as often as Elizabeth Bear or post as often as Jo Walton, or get as many comments as John Joseph Adams. I don’t post as much as I want to post, actually. So I looked at the nomination and felt like my team got there, but wondered if I helped them at all.

Then I thought, to hell with it. I’m associated with Tor.com, and I’m proud of their nomination, regardless of how much I contributed. It’s a great group of people who make that site, and I’m honored to be a part of it. So suck on THAT, third grade bully who has turned into a gremlin on my shoulder!

I had to laugh at that story because I had an almost identical experience: I was on a Little League baseball team, and lousy. The team won some local thing, everyone got trophies, and…yup, the jerk on the team said, “I don’t see why you go a trophy. You didn’t do anything.” Tough. I was on the team, so it’s my trophy, too. I still have it. :)

Anyway, feel good about your nomination, Mur. And congratulations to all the nominees.

Damn right you’re a part of that nomination:) If I can own a 23rd of a British Fantasy Award for a short story in an anthology? You get this:)
