I guess humor is subjective, but anyone who thinks that such a line will “get the entire audience on your side” needs to get out a little more.

If one exchanges points of view with other liberals exclusively, it might be difficult to understand that most of the country has no idea who Rachel Maddow might be, and a substantial share of the rest find her brand of commentary to be off-putting. Consider the likely reaction to “Glenn Beck rocks!” That might be a tad controversial, no?

  2. Arkle says:

Well duh. Of COURSE Rachel Maddow rocks. Tell us something we don’t know already. Sheesh. ;-)

  3. Mur says:

Rhiannon, I think to the proper audience, “Glen Beck rocks!” will get you a standing ovation. Remember the open mic is at a lesbian club. The audience at an open mic + lesbian club would tend to skew gay, liberal, and intellectual. Considering Rachel Maddow is gay, liberal, and a news commentator (regardless of whether you agree), it’s a pretty safe to bet that the whole audience there would be fans of hers.

  4. Rhianon Jameson says:

Ahhhh! Thank you, Mur – I spent a while staring at the comic to see if I was missing some clue that this was a lesbian club (or the Rachel Maddow Fan Club, or whatever). I had been following the comic and never got that.

I just now went back over all the All Write posts and realized I missed one – yup, Number 8, the one that says “Is that the lesbian bar?” *slinks back into hiding, red-faced*

  5. Mur says:

Rhianon- no worries, that’s kind of a key component. Without that, yeah, I would expect the WHOLE audience wouldn’t be on board.

  6. [...] to Pratchett. What piece of wisdom, you may ask? Well, you’ll just have to go check out the full comic to find out. [...]
