Thanks for posting this cast Mur. I know it takes a ton of courage to talk about many of the things you did. I understand completely how you feel. It’s always hard to discuss depression in context with your work or motivation. So much of that tends to be my problem…my depression sets in and I don’t write and then end up feeling worse because I’m not making progress. It’s even harder when you are in the public eye and you’ve made promises to others.
I respect you greatly for speaking about your fears and even more so for doing something about them.
You scared me for a second when it sounded like you weren’t going to keep doing ISBW but was relieved to hear that that is not your intention! Whew!
Since you never stop learning, I don’t think you need to worry about not having new things to say.
So keep up the good work and thank you again for the great podcast.

The podcast was a very courageous and eloquent reflection on how depression can plague a person with fear or self-doubt, which can then spark a whole vicious-cycle sh!tstorm of feeling like you’re getting nowhere. 18-year ‘melancholia’ veteran here – fully appreciate & respect how you are feeling.
Like Kimi above, I too had a horrible momentary feeling you were going to announce you were stopping ISBW. And I’m so relieved you’re sticking around.
Forget all about feeling bad about not having put enough podcasts out recently! It’s an absolute PRIVILEGE to be able to listen to ISBW, and I’m sure I don’t speak just for myself in that regard.
Kick out those remaining 2009 jams. Come back even stronger. All the best.

Thank-you for discussing anti-depressants and creativity. Too many are convinced the meds will reduce their creativity, so don’t take them. Or they don’t realize that not all treatments are the same — if the first one hinders creativity, discuss it with your doctor and try another.

Hey Mur,
I really appreciated this podcast. I know where you are coming from but my experience was the exact opposite. When I started taking medication for depression I could have played a role in The Takeover. I stopped writing, stopped painting and even stopped reading.
It wasn’t until I weaned myself off the meds that I started doing the things I love again. My depression was substantially workplace related, so being out of that job was also a big help.
I still have bad days – regular nightmares and very little sleep but I’d rather that than being a zombie. I am so glad your medication helped you because you and your podcasts certainly help other wanna-be writers.

Right there with you.
It always feels more like a new year to me when fall starts, September-ish. Guess my mind still likes to think about new school years even when I’m not a student.

To be broadcasting on the internet takes an unimaginable amount of courage, especially to talk about such personal matters. It’s a wonderful feeling getting to listen to your podcast, and we’re always willing to wait. I mean, you’re providing a wonderful service really for free, and we all appreciate it so much.
Good Luck with your 2010.

I tried playing this, and it wouldn’t and said ‘Error playing file’. Also, I tried downloading the iTunes podcasts and that didn’t work either… is it just me?

@Krissa, I had the same problem. The flash player said “error playing file” and the download link timed out.
