We did the same thing and for the same reasons…although I miss the heck out of my Chiller network. Netflix and Hulu are serving us just fine.

I find more time to write (I admit it, I watched tv when I should have been writing) and more time for the kids. I mean, who doesn’t love a great game of Life or Trouble every now and then? Oh, and my familiy gets fed regular meals now. Go figure.

Good for you! I rarely watch TV anymore, and I always regret it when I do. Not because what I watch is awful, but because it’s time I could have spent doing something else. I now only watch TV if I’ve got something I can sit and do while it’s on, like draw or knit. Otherwise, not so interested.

When I moved out onto my own in 2004, I didn’t even bother getting cable. I have a DVD player and Netflix, and that’s plenty. I’ve never been much of a TV-watcher, anyway. If only I’d never gotten internet access . . . then I’d be set!

I think that’s awesome, Mur. Cable can be such an addictive timesuck. I applaud your decision.

I’ve mentioned doing the same a few times to my wife and she ain’t havin’ it! You’d think I suggested cutting out her liver. And to be fair, I’ve been known to click it on after a hard day of caregiving & writing. So cable stays for now.

It’s amazing how much time, energy, and money you save when you DON’T have cable tv. We cancelled ours a few years ago, and it’s been great! More time, because I’m not getting sucked into watching scifi channel (I refuse to call it SyFy, but I digress). More money, obviously, and I can always check out DVDs of shows at the library and watch them a season at a time!

Great post! We are thinking of canceling cable because our six-month-old seem really drawn to the television, which can only mean trouble.

I turned off my cable over a month ago when we moved to a new apartment. Since then we’ve been using a computer to watch Hulu and our XBox to watch Netflix streaming. It’s great, because we can watch stuff when we have time, and not watch stuff when we don’t. There are a couple of shows I miss, but not much.
