In this podcast me and my camerawoman head to Staples to talk about the best tools for your submission kit. Her camera work isn’t the best, and I mispronounce “Pyr Books“, but we had a good time.

The kit:
Pens
Self-adhesive #10 envelopes for small queries and SASEs
Self-adhesive large envelopes for larger queries/partials
Tracking system for queries
Stamps (USA just raised postage to $0.44)
Adhesive address labels
And a chair.

It’s true. Every self-respecting writer needs a chair!

Are you sure the PT didn’t work as a camerawoman for MTV in the 90s? Low angle, shaky cam, subject half-in the frame… it’s genius! If only she knew how to use the zoom, you’d really be set. ;)

I also despise addressing envelopes, probably because my handwriting has not improved since the fourth grade. It has been my intention for a while to run a bunch of envelopes through the printer to get my SASEs ready, but that leaves them without the return address. The post office doesn’t seem to mind, but do magazines/agents/publishers? It’s a small deficit in personalization, but it is a deficit.

Anyway, I usually run them one at a time. I haven’t done any mass mailings since I don’t have any novels finished yet and most magazines despise simultaneous subs.

I agree with the need to have a submission kit. I need to start organizing. I need a desk with drawers first…

OMG! The notebook you picked up is the exact one I bought a few months ago for jotting down notes in. Same color and all.
