Hehe — love the part about “no offense” — isn’t that similar to the Southern staple “bless her/his soul?” It’s been explained to me that you can say any vile thing about someone as long as you follow it with those words — and get full pardon.

Erika, yes, “bless your heart” is used to remove the sting. “She hasn’t got the brains God gave a flea, bless her heart.”
