I was glad to see the shout-out to Critters. I've been a member since 2005, and I'd recommend this organization to any one. Andrew Burt does a hell of a job keeping a solid workshop going, and the mix of experience levels present amongst the critters ranges from total amateurs to award-winners.

Mur, I lost my entire October to upper respiratory infections. About NaNoWriMo, keep your head up. I'm at 9.5k words and I know I'm going to make it. But sometimes I'm too dumb to fail.

Good luck and you should be writing.

I should be. Though I guess technically I am since I am filling in a comment on a blog page.

Will, man. Just from your blog comment, it's apparent that you're extremely well-written. Regardless of what you may have sent the NEYWC folks, I'd be hard pressed to think that many high schoolers write at your level.

Per the writing on again, off again - so long as you don't have weeks where you don't write at all, it's a sufferable condition. I juggle a lot of different activities, so I can't always have the full out writing sessions that I'd like to have. But, I've found that, even if manage to write a single page's worth of material in a day, I'm the better for it. Yeah, a page might be small on the word count radar, but sometimes (most times?) it's not about word count but maintaining that visceral connection between yourself and the fiction.

Mur - the new show is just showing up as grey in my iTunes. It looks like it's there - with the little blue dot that says I haven't listened to it yet, but it won't play or update onto my ipod. Any ideas? I'm DYING for a new podcast!!! ;)

Of course, all the duplicate podcasts are showing up just fine. ARGH!

Hi, Mur! Thanks for reading my e-mail, it made my day after getting another short story rejection. (I haven't gotten to the point of submitting novels yet. That landmark is currently looming in the distant future and being scary.)

Good luck with NaNo. It's possible to catch up but NaNo bragging rights aren't worth getting sick(er) over--weigh whether it's worth it, I guess I'm saying.

--Kristin

Virginia, Vermont: same thing, right? Well, wrong, of course. But that didn't stop me from saying that Middlebury College is in Virginia, when it is really in Vermont. Whoops.

Thanks several bunches for all your advice and your interest. My school's English department has allowed me to apply, and I have decided to send the first page of a story that I have been writing in a very "on again, off again" fashion for several weeks. (I would not recommend this method of writing, as you might expect, since it often leads to continuity errors and other regrettable things. Unfortunately, more often than not, it is the only sort of fiction writing I have time for, considering that my high school is very demanding.)

So, as of now, the application is sent, and I will be sure to let you know what the result is when I find out ... in March. Patience is indeed a virtue.

Admittedly, I was quite vague concerning the expectations of the New England Young Writers’ Conference, but then again they are somewhat vague as well. From what I’ve seen, they accept submissions in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Though I’m known to churn out a haiku once in a while, I am far from being a poet. And, since fiction is really what I want to do more of, I chose to send off something fictional.

Each year, the NEYWC accepts two hundred high school juniors from the area of New England and New York. The operative word in that sentence, as I see it, is “juniors.” In other words, this is my only shot at getting accepted to this event. So, here’s hoping that I didn’t totally blow it. And here’s looking forward to March.

Oh, and thanks again. I'm sure I'll be in touch again sooner than not.

Mur,

I can understand how being sick puts you behind. I was sick the weeks leading up to NaNo and still have a cough. Good luck with your NaNo project, I'm sure you'll get back on track. But from personal experience you have to watch how hard you push. The first year I did NaNo I finish in 15 days, but I wasn't use to writing at that level and ended up not writing for nearly a month.

Also thanks for play to promo. Anyway I think I should be writing.

Terry
