Listener Kendall pointed out to me that Miss Snark proclaims the last word on word count, and it is a big relief to those of us who prefer Word’s feature over multiplying pages by 250.

Seriously, if you’re not reading Miss Snark, what’s wrong with you?

I just heard that Octavia Butler died recently. She collapsed outside her house of what doctors assume was a stroke and when she arrived at the hospital, the blood had pooled in her brain. They operated but she died.

Octavia was on my “I’ll get around to reading her someday” list, now I regret not reading her sooner. I’d read some of her short fiction and it was quite good. She’ll be missed.

James Patrick Kelly, who was interviewed here a couple of shows back, was just nominated for a Nebula Award for his short story, “Men are Trouble” (Asimov’s, Jun04). See all the other Nebula nominees here.

Jim has won the Hugo twice, but never the Nebula. Good luck Jim!

Self Absorbed informed me I missed the link on K7.net about the vanity numbers. Being vain, I immediately changed the I Should Be Writing number.

K7.net has gone the opposite way of compuserve. Back in the day, compuserve would assign bizzare strings of characters to serve as email addresses, now you can choose your own. And when K7 launched, we could choose our own phone number, within reason (Geek Fu’s voice mail is 206-202-1MUR, for example). So I wanted to give I Should Be Writing its own voice mail, but was disappointed to realize they’re now simply assigning the numbers.

And it has zeroes, so not much creativity there (although my phone number in college was WAY 0 H0G and I just had to tell my friends to use zero as the “o” in hog). But without further ado, ISBW voice mail line is: 206-339-9003

It’s free when you call from work.

And in the realm of challenges, was chatting with Steve Eley from Escape Pod last night and we were talking about if there was any demand for skiffy porn, and I said I would totally write superhero porn and he said he would totally read it. Which inspired me, so last night I started a story about the hero Golden Fox and the villain The Crotch and Dan, the citizen who is caught in the entire mess.

Someone help me. I’m losing my mind.

Lastly, we’re doing the Great Rejection Challenge of 2006 on the forums, all you need to do is keep your signature updated with your rejections of this year. Check it out.

Listener John wrote to say:

In brief, there is a windows based, open-source wiki named ‘Wikidpad’ that your users may be interested in. For windows writers, ‘PDesk’ is another freeware wiki-alternative AND it comes with palm syncing partner ‘Progect’. For folks that like to keep their on-the-go notes electronically.

Wikidpad for Windows

PDesk for linux/windows/mac

Progect for Palm OS

Thanks, John!

I attended StellarCon this weekend and it promised free wifi, free high speed Internet, and all sorts of shiny things. My computer and its network did not play well together, so I couldn’t record and upload. I’ll get a podcast done today.

In other news, removing myself from the Internet gave me the time to finish the hard copy editing of my novel, which was awesome. I spent time with two other excellent writing-focused podcasters, Tee Morris and Mike Stackpole, and tried my best to convince other writers to start podcasting.

In the world of VOICES: New Media Fiction, we have all the stories turned in and a cover at last! We seem to be on track for a March 1 launch!

And lastly, if you will look to the right, I’ve posted my progress for the year. Yeah, I haven’t written much fiction because I’ve been focusing on editing the novel. Keep watch for rejection numbers. That should be going up - rejection means I’m trying. It would be great if acceptance went up too, incidentally….

PaulJ posted a comment a ways down that I wanted to bring attention to: http://www.aburt.com/writing-productivity.shtml

Thanks Paul! I’m off to StellarCon for the weekend, so I’m going to be behind in emails and stuff. New ISBW soon, though!
