ISBW #20 - Interview with James Patrick Kelly

James Patrick Kelly was kind enough to chat with me for a while about MFAs, first readers, and personal styles. Be sure to check out his podcast novella, Burn.

  1. Wow, two episodes in one day. You go, Mur.

  2. I’m feeling lots better. And I can’t STAND missing deadlines. :)

  3. Hey Mur. Long time listener, first time… commenter… Just wanted to let you know that I am enjoying the podcast immensely and plugged your show on my most recent podcast.

    Peace.

  4. Your comments about Bradbury’s book got me thinking.

I would think that it would be quite difficult to find anyone in ANY field that, no matter how passionately they loved their work, didn’t have days they just felt like doing something else. I think it’s part of human nature to want variety in our diets, be they literal or creative.

And as far as an MFA goes, just personal opinion (and this comes from someone who didn’t finish her Bachelor’s) as long as your happy with what you are doing and seeing the progress you want to see, then the schooling sounds like an unneccessary burden on an already busy life.

  5. I personaly am not that interested in taking courses. Ultimately I’m more interested in simply putting in the hard yards writing and doing a lot of critical reading. If I get a few free grand I’m off on 3-6 month trip overseas.

    Jose
